Iran “should have taken the deal that was on the table- Would have saved a lot of lives!!!,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
This comes hour after Trump put out a post stating that the Israel-Iran ceasefire was not why he cut short his visit, hinting at a “much bigger” move.
“Real end”
Trump also said that he was aiming for a “real end” to the conflict between Israel and Iran, and not just a ceasefire, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way back from the Group of Seven summit in Canada, Trump stated, that he is “not looking for a ceasefire,” adding, “we’re looking at better than a ceasefire.”
When asked what that meant, he replied, “A real end. Not a ceasefire. An end.” with Iran “giving up entirely” on nuclear weapons.Story continues below this ad
“Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, it’s very simple,” he said.
The remarks come amid a surge in hostilities between Iran and US ally Israel, after the latter launched airstrikes on Friday. This has escalated tensions in a region already on edge since Israel’s military assault on Gaza began in October 2023.
Trump said he may send US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff or Vice President JD Vance to meet with Iranian officials, but added, “it depends on what happens when I get back.” Asked whether Israel might slow down its strikes, Trump said: “You’re going to find out over the next two days. You’re going to find out. Nobody’s slowed up so far.”
Since Friday’s strikes, both Iran and Israel have exchanged attacks. Iranian officials have reported over 220 deaths, mostly civilians, while Israel said 24 civilians were killed.Story continues below this ad
Israel, the US and other Western nations have long sought to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Tehran, however, denies seeking nuclear arms and claims its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to which it is a signatory. Israel, which is not a party to the NPT, is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons.
