The controversy surrounding Angelo Mathews being timed out during the game against Bangladesh continued well after the match with the Sri Lankan player sharing video evidence on Tuesday which shows he made it to the middle within two minutes — the cut off time for the next batsman to be ready to take strike after the fall of a wicket.
What evidence has Angelo Mathews presented
Speaking to the media after Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka three wickets, Mathews said he had visual evidence to prove that he had made it to the centre on time. The day after the game, he shared a video on X, with time stamps, which shows him standing at the crease and gesturing to the dressing room for a change of helmet (broken strap) within the time limit. There were still five seconds for him to be ready to face the ball, according to the video. This was when Bangladesh appealed for ‘timed out’.
What did the fourth umpire say about Angelo Mathews getting timed out
The fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock, who has timer with him, told Star Sports on Monday, “In the instance this afternoon (sic), the batter wasn’t ready to receive the ball within those two minutes even before the strap became an issue for him.” But according to the broadcast visual, which Mathews put out, the helmet strap came off with still five seconds to go the clock. An angry Angelo Mathews lashes out at umpires
According to Mathews, Bangladesh appealed only after he asked for a replacement helmet. Apart from blaming Shakib and his team, Mathews also put the blame on umpires for not checking with the third umpire about when exactly his helmet strap malfunctioned. “So, we talk about player safety. And a wicket keeper for the spinner… they don’t let him keep without his helmet. So how can I take my guard without my helmet? It’s a complete equipment malfunction.”
What was Shakib al Hasan’s defence about the appeal?

The Bangladesh captain was at the centre of controversy appealing for timed out dismissal. Post-match Shakib claimed that it was one of his teammates who told him about the rule. “It is in the laws. I don’t know if it is right or wrong. But I felt like I was at war. I had to take decision to make sure my team wins,” he said. When asked what would be his reaction if the boot was on the other foot, Shakib retorted: “I will be careful so that it doesn’t happen to me.”

While Bangladesh were well within their rights to appeal, the question is why the umpires didn’t factor in the equipment malfunction.
