Tired of AI slop? YouTube gets new filters to hide Shorts from search results | Technology News

YouTube, like most social media platforms, is increasingly flooded with AI-generated content. A recent study suggests that one in five videos, and nearly half of the Shorts recommended to a new accounts are AI-generated. For those unfamiliar, AI slop is defined as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity means of artificial intelligence.”
To address this, the Google-owned video platform is rolling out a couple of new search filters that give users greater control over the content they see. According to YouTube, these updates are designed to provide “more effective advanced search tools.” In a post, YouTube said that it has added a new Shorts filter to the ‘Type’ menu that lets users hide Shorts from search results. This is really useful since viewers will now be able to hide numerous AI-generated ten-second clips.
The platform has also renamed the ‘Sort ’ menu to ‘Prioritize’, while the ‘View Count’ option has been replaced with ‘Popularity’. Unlike view count alone, the new Popularity filter factors in additional signals, such as watch time, to rank videos.
At the same time, YouTube has removed certain options. This includes the “Upload Date – Last Hour” and the “Sort Rating” filters. At the time of writing, it is still unclear if the removed options will make a comeback, but considering Google has a track record of rolling back changes, it won’t be surprising if the company changes its mind in the future.
Currently, the updated search filters appear to be available only to some users, suggesting a phased rollout. As a result, it may take some time before the new options become visible on all accounts.
