Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, VIP 2 box office report – Akshay Kumar’s film crosses Rs 50 cr over weekend
The Akshay Kumar-Bhumi Pednedkar starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha released on 11 August and has raked in approximately Rs 51.45 crore over the movie’s opening weekend according to box office reports.
The film saw a decent opening day, and did business of over Rs 13 crore. It held steady on its second day, as there was an increase in the revenue it earned. This film, directed by Shree Narayan Singh, brought in over Rs 17 crore on its second day. The third and final day which rounded off the movie’s opening weekend saw a revenue of around Rs 21 cr, displaying an unusually massive incline for movies, according to a tweet by trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Dhanush and Kajol’s Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 (VIP 2) also saw its release this Friday, and the latest update is that the film has grossed over Rs 5.7 cr on its opening day, according to a tweet by Sreedhar Pillai.
This movie marks Kajol’s re-entry into Tamil cinema after a long hiatus. The movie sees an unusual chemistry between Dhanush and Kajol, however it seems to have worked its charm at the box office.
VIP 2 is the story of a married man who faces trouble finding a stable job which earns him good money, until Kajol’s bossy and arrogant character is introduced on screen and the two are involved in one massive showdown all throughout the movie, until Raghuvaran (Dhanush) bests Vasundhara (Kajol).
Toilet: Ek Prem Katha tackles the issue of open defecation in India, and the lack of proper sanitation in rural areas. The film is about the relationship between Kumar and Pednekar’s characters. After the two of them get married, Pednekar realises that her husband’s house does not have a toilet installed within the premises, leading her character to threaten leaving her husband if he doesn’t find a way out of the situation.
