Tottenham Hotspur mascot accidently roasts his own team’s defence
Ahead of the first-leg of Tottenham Hotspur’s English League Cup semifinal versus Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk was given a bit of a chuckle over-eager Tottenham mascots lining up in the stadium.
In a video posted on its social media handles Sky Sports, Spurs mascots are standing in a line outside the players dressing room when they spot the Dutch defender arriving. This gets the little kids excited and one of them shouts: “Van Dijk come to Tottenham we haven’t got any good defenders at the moment!”
This brings a big grin on the face of the Liverpool defender as he walks past the Tottenham mascots while high-fiving them.

Once the match began, there was very little for Van Dijk or Liverpool to smile about. Despite the Tottenham mascots having little faith in their defence, it held strong, as Spurs won the first leg 1-0.
The 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall scored his first goal for Tottenham to give the team a lead heading into the second leg at Anfield.
Bergvall slotted home the winner in the 86th minute following a pass from Dominic Solanke, who thought 10 minutes earlier that he had given Tottenham the lead. That goal was ruled out after a VAR check for offside and referee Stuart Attwell communicated the decision via a wireless microphone to spectators inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and to TV viewers.
Liverpool were incensed that Bergvall was on the pitch at all to score, as they believed he should have been sent off for an incident just before he scored in the 86th minute.
Van Dijk said: “I think it was quite obvious it was going to be a second yellow [for Bergvall]. It was pretty clear. And a minute later he scores the winner … a coincidence. He [the referee] made a make in my opinion and I told him that. He thinks he didn’t but it was quite obvious and everyone on the sidelines knew it was supposed to be a yellow.
“There’s a linesman there, a fourth official there, there’s VAR, a referee and he doesn’t get a second yellow. I’m not saying this is the reason why we lost tonight but it was a big moment in the game.”
