‘The era of youngsters officially begins today’: Chess fraternity reacts to Gukesh going ahead of Viswanathan Anand in rankings | Chess News

Chess fraternity has showered praise on 17-year-old Gukesh D, who went past Viswanathan Anand to became India’s top-ranked chess player.

Gukesh, who only broke into the top 100 in April last year, will end the month as the top-ranked Indian after his victory over Mradin Iskandrov in the second round of the FIDE World Cup at Baku.

As Anand pointed had pointed out earlier, it was inevitable that someone would eventually catch up to him. The five-time world champion, who has eased off from playing in the world championship cycle events in recent years has lauded his protege’s achievement.

“Absolutely Proud! We started off with one GM , one World Champion and now we have two top ten players. Congratulations to the generation of Indian talent especially to our new No.1 @DGukesh!,” Anand wrote on Twitter.

Gukesh’s trainer GM Vishnu Prasanna, who was also India’s 33rd grandmaster, said his ward destined to do great things.

Chess coach RB Ramesh, who is training another child prodigy R Praggnanandhaa, credits Gukesh’s sucess to Viswanathan Anand and says the Indian chess owes the five-time world champion a lot.

Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra group has praised the teenager and said it is a strange feeling that someone has overtaken Vishwanathan Anand and predicted that the teenager may go all the way to secure the No 1 position.
