Trump adminration plans to cut 700 jobs, 132 bureaus in major shake-up of US State Department | World News

Continuing the shake-up of government agencies, US President Donald Trump’s adminration has announced a major overhaul in the State Department with plans to eliminate 132 bureaus and slashing about 700 jobs, in line with the government’s “America First” priorities, CNN reported.
The plan has been notified to the Congress and as per an internal State Department memo, 132 of the US State Department’s 734 offices and bureaus are proposed to be shut, while the undersecretaries would submit plans to cut 15% workforce, Reuters reported.
The US State Department has said that slashing the staff and shutting down bureaus deems necessary in order to maintain efficacy and relevance, CNN reported. It quoted an official from the State Department who said the department’s current organization chart is “bloated” and it had a “deleterious effect on foreign policy and relevance of the Department.”

Deputy Secretary of State Chropher Landau in an email said that the overhauling of the US State Department will be carried out an internal working group, which will be responsible for implementing the reorganization and develop detailed plans for each part of the department July 1, Reuters reported.

In a post on X, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “Today is the day. Under @POTUS’ leadership and at my direction, we are reversing decades of bloat and bureaucracy at the State Department. These sweeping changes will empower our talented diplomats to put America and Americans first.”
According to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, the major overhaul of the State Department is not being done billionaire Elon Musk led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has led massive cuts throughout the federal government.
Trump had issued an executive order in February to revamp the US Foreign Service and overhaul the State Department, directing Rubio to ensure the US diplomatic corps faithfully implemented the task.
