Trump congratulates Canada’s Carney, agree to meet in-person following Liberals victory | World News

US President Donald Trump held a telephonic conversation with Canada’s Prime Miner Mark Carney after the latter’s Liberal Party won the country’s general election and the two leaders agreed to meet in the near future.
The US and Canada are expected to have bilateral talks regarding new policies for economic and security relationship after the conclusion of the general election in Canada. In their first call since the election, President Trump congratulated PM Carney over winning the 2025 polls, the prime miner’s office said on Tuesday.
In an official readout, the PM office said “The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together as independent, sovereign nations for their mutual betterment,” CBC reported.

However, the political pundits believe this year’s general election in Canada was overshadowed Trump’s trade tariffs and repeated comments undermining Canada’s sovereignty.

Even after winning the election, it is going to be a tightrope walk for PM Carney as his Liberal Party failed to achieve a majority in the polls with 169 seats, three short of the magic figure of 172.
Now this result would make it tough for Carney to negotiate with Trump and simultaneously tackle a range of domestic issues, as he would be required to garner support from other political parties.
The US State Department, in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon said “We look forward to working with Prime Miner Carney’s government, particularly on key issues such as trade fairness, combating illegal immigration, halting the flow of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs and countering the Chinese Commun Party influence in our hemisphere,” CBC reported.
Trump had earlier threatened to annex Canada as the 51st US State and White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said that the victory of Liberal party in Canada’s election doesn’t affect President Trump’s plan to make Canada “America’s cherished 51st state.”Story continues below this ad
It still remains a horic turnaround for the Liberals, even if they form a minority government, since the party was heading for a collapse a few months ago and the opinion polls suggested similar outcomes.
