US President Donald Trump will attend the upcoming G7 summit in Canada next month, the White House confirmed on Thursday, even as tensions linger over his provocative remarks suggesting Canada should become the 51st US state.“President Trump will travel to the G7 leaders’ summit in Canada from June 15 through the 17th,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a daily briefing.
US-Canada relations have been rocky in recent months, fuelled Trump’s repeated calls for Canada to join the United States and his imposition of sweeping tariffs. However, ties showed signs of thawing after newly elected Canadian Prime Miner Mark Carney visited the White House earlier this month following his April election victory.
In a pointed exchange in the Oval Office, Carney told Trump that Canada was “never for sale,” but both leaders later described the meeting as productive.
