Umesh Yadav appointed assistant manager at RBI’s Nagpur office

Umesh Yadav had once pursued his father’s dream of holding a government job as he had prepared himself for an examination for the post of a constable in the police department. Though Yadav had missed making the cut only by a whisker, ten years on, now as India’s premier fast bowler, Yadav’s former dream has finally come true in a much bigger way.

The 29-year-old has been appointed as an assistant manager in Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Nagpur office and he completed the formalities of the same yesterday before leaving to spearhead the Indian bowling attack on the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Although this may come as a surprise to some, a source has revealed that talks had been going on for a while now. “The talks were on before the Champions Trophy. He had met RBI officials before leaving for England in May. The officials gave a go ahead to his appointment in sports quota but due to national duties he couldn’t complete formalities,” a source close to the development told TOI.

In fact, Yadav’s dream of holding a permanent government job should have come true during his days with Vidarbha cricket in 2008 itself, as the then Vidarbha skipper Preetam Gandhe straight away took him to Air India where he got his first contract. However, despite performing well, Air India didn’t give him a permanent job.
“He should have got a permanent job straight away but things didn’t work out. He always wanted to represent a reputed organisation. That was the reason he didn’t make any hurry. Now, he has got what he deserved,” the source added.

Although Yadav may no longer need the security of a government job, the appointment still means a lot to him, as mentioned by the source. “He couldn’t have asked for a better organisation than RBI. Though he is financially secured – as most of the current generation cricketers are, thanks to IPL – it’s always good to have a permanent job.”
