(AP Photo)US Government Shutdown Live Updates: The US Senate has voted to end the longest-running government shutdown, which entered its 40th day on Sunday, as at least seven Democrats reportedly backed the agreement proposed President Donald Trump and the Republicans. If the bill passes, the logjam in Congress would end, and it would then proceed to the House of Representatives for approval before being sent to President Trump for his signature.
Contours of a deal: The agreement proposed the Republicans would fund a few parts of the federal government, including food aid, veterans programs and the legislative branch, among others and extend the federal funding until January 30. A vote on subsidies in healthcare, as demanded Republicans, would also take place December, people aware of the matter told AP. The deal is also poised to reinstate the laidoff federal workers and those who received notices, and reimburses states that spent their own funds to keep federal programs running during the shutdown.Story continues below this ad
Democratic pushback expected: Though Republicans control the US Senate with a 53-47 margin, they still require at least seven more votes to 60 to reopen the government and seven Democrats have reportedly agreed to endorse the GOP-backed bill. However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has said that he will not back the bill. Reports have suggested that Republicans have managed to gain enough support to pass the government funding bill in the Senate and end the horic shutdown.
