US officials have held talks in Kabul with Taliban authorities about Americans detained in Afghanan, the Taliban’s foreign minry said on Saturday.

The meeting involved Adam Boehler, the Trump adminration’s special envoy for hostage response, and Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US envoy for Afghanan. They sat down with Taliban Foreign Miner Amir Khan Muttaqi, according to the minry.

“Both parties emphasised the continuation of talks on various current and future issues in bilateral relations, particularly regarding citizens imprisoned in each other’s countries,” the minry said in a statement cited Reuters.

Washington has not issued a statement about the meeting, and Khalilzad did not respond to a call for comment, Reuters reported.

US officials have said that Mahmood Habibi, a naturalised American citizen, is the most prominent detainee in Afghanan, although the Taliban denies holding him.

The Taliban took power in 2021 after two decades of US military presence in Afghanan and remain unrecognised Washington.
