Varun Chakravarthy can still make it to the India Champions Trophy squad, hints skipper Rohit Sharma | Cricket News

India skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday kept the doors open for spinner Varun Chakravarthy to make it into the Champions Trophy squad, saying that it all hinges on his performance in the upcoming ODI series against England.
“Yeah look, he has certainly shown something different. I understand that it is a T20 format but he has clearly got something different about him. So we just wanted to have an option and see what we can do with him,” Rohit said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the 1st ODI in Nagpur.
“Clearly during the series it presents us an opportunity to play him at some stage and see what he is capable of. Right now we are not thinking about whether we are going to take him or not but definitely he will be in contention. If things plan out really well for us and he does what is required then definitely there is something that we need to think about,” the Indian skipper added.

The 33-year-old tweaker could be in line for his maiden ODI call-up and debut, shortly before the Champions Trophy due to begin in Dubai in two weeks.
On Tuesday, Chakaravarthy was seen bowling for over an hour against the Indian batters during the training session at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha.
Chakaravarthy was the pick of the Indian bowlers in the recent five-match T20I series that the hosts won over England a 4-1 margin. The Tamil Nadu spinner bagged 14 wickets, including a five-for, the most an Indian bowler in a bilateral T20I series.

While India had originally named four other spinners in their provisional Champions Trophy squad, it will be interesting to see if Chakaravarthy will replace one of Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar or Kuldeep Yadav in the final squad which can be announced the February 12 deadline.
