‘Vidhu Vinod Chopra asked if I want to marry him, I said no’: Om Puri’s first wife recalls their relationship, reveals why she rejected VVC’s proposal | Bollywood News

Seema Kapoor, the first wife of late actor Om Puri, reflected on their divorce and her subsequent relationship with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. She refused to describe him as a ‘rebound’, and admitted that he lent her a shoulder of support when she was going through her separation. Vinod himself was nursing a heartbreak, and the two ended up together. But she turned down his proposal for marriage, she said in a new interview, revealing why she couldn’t bring herself to take the plunge with him. Seema and Om Puri’s marriage lasted only a few months, and ended because he cheated on her.
Vinod was her friend, as was his first wife, editor Renu Saluja. “After I left Om, I met Vinod, who was working on the film Khamosh. We were friends first, both of us needed a shoulder to cry on, and it just evolved into something else from there. I thank god for the friendship we had, because we’re still friends. Relationships end, but friendships don’t.” Seema said that she became an introvert after her marriage with Om Puri failed, and that Vinod probably became more possessive after experiencing his own heartbreak.

She continued, “This doesn’t mean that he’s still possessive. But he was for a while. But I always knew that I wouldn’t be able to love him like I loved Puri sahab. Puri sahab even complimented us as a pair. Vinod was a beautiful man, I’m nothing in front of him. But I felt that I wouldn’t be able to do justice to this relationship. Our families wanted us to get married; Vinod wanted to get married; but I said no.”
Asked why she said no, Seema explained what happened. She said, “I had hidden some details about my relationship with Puri sahab from him. I didn’t have the courage. I felt that I couldn’t lie to him all my life if I marry him. We were at the beach, and like little children, we were writing messages to each other. He wrote, ‘Do you love me?’ I wrote, ‘Yes’. He wrote, ‘Will you marry me?’ I wrote, ‘No’. He didn’t know what to say to me; he just looked at me quietly. Seema revealed that Vinod found out the real reason why his proposal was rejected only now, when he read her autobiography. “He said, ‘So, this was the reason?’ And I said yes,” she recalled. She said that they remain friends to this day.
