Former India skipper Virat Kohli on Monday responded to Prime Miner Narendra Modi’s tribute to him.
After Kohli announced his T20I retirement after India’s World Cup win on Saturday, PM Modi took to his social media to congratulate the second-highest run scorer in the format’s hory.
“Glad to have spoken to you. Like the innings in the Finals, you have anchored Indian batting splendidly. You’ve shone in all forms of the game. T20 Cricket will miss you but I am confident you’ll continue to motivate the new generation of players,” Modi wrote.
Dear @narendramodi sir, thank you so much for your very kind words and your support and encouragement always. It has been a privilege to be a part of this team which has brought the cup home. We are deeply touched & overwhelmed with the happiness it has bought the entire nation. https://t.co/dpKiJiMFih

Responding to the same, Kohli wrote, “Dear Narendra Modi sir, thank you so much for your very kind words and your support and encouragement always. It has been a privilege to be a part of this team which has brought the cup home. We are deeply touched & overwhelmed with the happiness it has bought the entire nation.”
Kohli was the player of the match for India in a nervy T20 World Cup final win against South Africa, scoring 76 off 59 balls – his highest score in the recently concluded edition of the tournament.
Calling it quits after the final Kohli said, “This was an open secret (smiles). It was not something that I was not going to announce even if we had lost. This was going to be my last T20 World Cup playing for India. It’s time for the next generation to take over. It’s a 2-year cycle and there are some amazing players playing in India and they are going to take the team forward in the T20 format and do wonders as we have seen them do in the IPL and I have no doubts that they will keep the flags waving high and take this team further from here now. It’s been a long wait for us just waiting to win an ICC tournament.”
The 35-year-old played 125 T20Is for India, scoring 4188 runs. Only Rohit Sharma has scored more in the format’s hory (4231).
