Vitamin B12 Strips Or Tablets Know Benefits, Risks and Expert Tips Find Out Which One Supplement You Should Pick

Vitamin B12 Strips vs Tablets: Vitamin B12 is essential for many bodily functions, such as forming red blood cells, synthesising DNA, maintaining energy levels, and developing the nervous system. If the body is unable to meet the daily requirement of this vitamin from daily food intake, it could lead to a deficiency. In such a case, your doctor may prescribe certain vitamin B12 supplements — tablets or strips — for improved health. But are both forms equally effective?
Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, said that strips make vitamin B12 directly reach the bloodstream for effective results. “It is believed that dissolvable strips work faster than tablets and are more efficient when it comes to absorption,” said Dr Agarwal.
This sublingual route passes the digestive system, which can be advantageous for individuals with absorption issues, such as those with gastrointestinal disorders, older adults, or those on medications that inhibit B12 absorption, said Dr Maneendra, consultant and HOD critical care department, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad. “Compared to tablets, B12 strips are often faster-acting due to direct absorption and are more convenient to carry and consume without water. They can be especially beneficial for individuals with difficulty swallowing pills,” added Dr Maneendra.

However, both forms are effective for most individuals when taken as prescribed, asserted Dr Maneendra. “Tablets may be more cost-effective and come in varied dosages, while strips are typically priced higher due to their advanced delivery mechanism,” said Dr Maneendra.

According to Dr Maneendra, B12 strips are often recommended for those with severe deficiencies or absorption challenges, but tablets are suggested for routine supplementation. “Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference, medical hory, and consultation with a healthcare provider. For sustained results, focus on a balanced diet rich in B12 sources like dairy, eggs, meat, and fortified foods alongside supplements,” said Dr Maneendra.
Dr Agarwal emphasised the need to understand that not everyone may need B12 supplements. “Avoid taking any supplements you see online or on social media platforms. Supplements should be taken only when prescribed the doctor. If you are unsure whether vitamin B12 supplement strips are optimal for you, then consider consulting a doctor. Your doctor may evaluate your health for further diagnosis,” said Dr Agarwal.
