Former US President Barack Obama has opened up about the toll his time in office took on his marriage, admitting he’s now making up for the lost time with his wife, Michelle Obama.
Speaking during a candid conversation with Hamilton College President Steven Tepper on Thursday, Obama, 63, said, “I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” referring to the emotional and time cost of his presidency.
“So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole occasionally doing fun things.” The former president said he’s enjoying the chance to reconnect, echoing comments from a 2023 CBS interview where he noted it “sure helps to be out of the White House.”

Barack and Michelle, who met in the late ’80s while working at a law firm in Chicago and married in 1992, have been open over the years about the challenges of balancing public life and family.
Michelle revealed in a 2022 interview on Revolt TV, that there were “10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband”, pointing how parenting and Barack’s political ascent strained their bond.
The Obamas, who now reside in Washington, DC, have recently faced a swirl of wild rumours, including baseless claims that Barack was having an affair with Friends star Jennifer Anon.

In an apparent effort to shut down the gossip, the Obamas have taken to social media to share affectionate selfies and heartfelt Valentine’s Day messages, reaffirming their bond in the public eye.
