Arshdeep made the most of the new duke ball as both of his wickets came in his first spell, after Northamptonshire won the toss and opted to bat.
However it was Australian Wes Agar, who claimed the second five-wicket haul of his first-class career to restrict Northamptonshire to a modest 237.
For Northamptonshire, Rob Keogh led a spirited fightback for the hosts with a fine 97. Sam Whiteman (40), Tom Taylor (35) and Saif Zaib (26) were the other notable contributors.
For Kent, Wes Agar (5/63), Hamidullah Qadri (3/69) and Arshdeep Singh (2/56) shared the spoils.
In reply, Kent were 110 for 1 with Tawanda Muyeye (58 not out) and Daniel Bell-Drummond (48 not out) being involved in an unbeaten 93-run stand for the second wicket. Kent lost opener Ben Compton (4) cheaply after he was castled Ben Sanderson.
