‘We are ready for anything’: Poland on high alert, scrambles NATO aircraft amid Russian drone threat | World News

Polish authorities have shut down Warsaw International Airport and scrambled both Polish and NATO aircraft after reports of Russian drones over Poland, Reuters reported. According to the Polish military, ground-based air defences and radar systems were put on the highest alert.
The move comes hours after Russia carried out major airstrikes on Ukraine. According to Poland’s military operational command, Polish and allied aircraft are constantly patrolling the skies, tracking every move closely.
“Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness,” the official social media handle of the Polish Armed Forces X, adding that the Polish military is fully ready to respond immediately to any threat.

“To ensure the security of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces has activated all necessary procedures,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the US Federal Aviation Adminration (FAA) issued a notice saying Warsaw Chopin Airport was closed “due to unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
Earlier, the Ukrainian Air Force warned on Telegram that drones were spotted flying west, threatening the Polish city of Zamosc. The statement was deleted just minutes later. So far, it’s unclear how many drones entered Polish territory.
Ukrainian media also reported at least one drone heading toward Rzeszow in western Poland. In Ukraine, western regions like Volyn and Lviv, which border Poland, were under air raid alerts for several hours. Meanwhile, Poland has not officially confirmed any drones in its airspace overnight.Story continues below this ad
Earlier, Prime Miner Donald Tusk announced that Poland would close its border with Belarus on Thursday after aggressive military drills involving Russia, adding that the move also responds to growing provocations from both Russia and Belarus.
Meanwhile, Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki warned, “We do not trust Vladimir Putin’s good intentions.” He added, “While waiting for lasting peace, we believe Putin is ready to invade other countries.”
In the US, Senator Richard Blumenthal urged Congress and President Donald Trump to pass a bipartisan bill that would impose heavy secondary sanctions on countries still purchasing Russian oil.
This includes countries like India, China and Brazil. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham co-sponsored the bill. “The president should support this,” Blumenthal told NPR. “It’s time for action. Putin has stalled and played the US, and Congress is serious, 85 co-sponsors, split evenly between parties.” Story continues below this ad
Trump on Sunday declared he was ready to impose more sanctions on Russia, but it seems that the US president wants the EU to act at the same time.
