Weekend Watch L: How not to be a goalkeeper, how not to be a sprinter, how not to catch a ball and more | Sport-others News
In the week gone , Nasra Abukar Ali joined a group of athletes with creatively cruel nicknames such as Eric the Eel and Trevor the Tortoise. Why? The Somalian sprinter ran herself into infamy after completing a 100m sprint at the World University Games in China’s Chengdu with a tediously slow timing of 21.81 seconds.
So slow was the 20-year-old sprinter that Somalia’s sports miner Mohamed Barre Mohamud has had to publicly apologise; the chairwoman of the country’s athletics federation, Khadijo Aden Dahir, has found herself suspended and Nasra could be facing legal action for competing despite being neither a sportsperson nor a runner.
The Minry of Youth and Sports should step down. It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government. How could they select an untrained girl to represent Somalia in running? It’s truly shocking and reflects poorly on our country internationally. pic.twitter.com/vMkBUA5JSL

Many in Somalia have called it a national embarrassment.
The past week brought along a rich bounty of embarrassment from elsewhere as well.
On the football field, Manchester United’s new goalkeeper André Onana marked his Old Trafford debut under the bar… getting chipped from center circle!

Onana, signed in the transfer window for £47million, had drifted at the mid-way point of their half during the friendly against Lens. That’s when disaster struck! A misplaced pass from Diogo Dalot, was picked up Lens’ Florian Sotoca, who noticed that Onana was wandering way outside his box, and took a shot from the halfway line. Onana backtracked in desperation, but only to see the ball sail over his head into the goal.
At the other end of the pitch, another new signing for United was not having too much luck either.
Mason Mount, picked up from Chelsea for £55million in the transfer window, fluffed a shot that any forward could have scored blindfolded. Alejandro Garnacho squared the ball from the left flank perfectly into the path of the onrushing Mount, who just needed to tap the ball in. Instead, to the horror of everyone in red jerseys at Old Trafford, he ended up making contact with the ball in a way that it went away from goal!
Meanwhile, at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Jamaica’s manager Lorne Donaldson celebrated the team’s upset victory over heavyweights Brazil attempting to do a cartwheel. Twice! Both attempts were comical, with the second one a tad more sloppy than the first one.

Elsewhere, on the cricket field, Prithvi Shaw’s Northamptonshire debut ended in bizarre fashion, with the Mumbai batter unable to fend off a bouncer from Paul van Meekeren. Not only did Prithvi crash to the floor while attempting to hook the ball, he also ended up kicking his stumps. Shaw was dismissed hit wicket for 34.
HIT WICKET!!!! 🚀
Paul van Meekeren with a fierce bumper that wipes out Prithvi Shaw who kicks his stumps on the way down. What a delivery! Shaw goes for 34.

If Shaw was throwing away his wicket, Ben Stokes was throwing away lifelines in the final Ashes Test. While fielding at leg slip, Steve Smith failed to keep a ball from Moeen Ali down. The ball looped in the air and Stokes jumped up in the air with his arm outstretched. He caught the ball, but on his way down lost control of it. The umpire declared it not out, before the England team reviewed the decision. The review did not go the way of the hosts.

There was also plenty of comedy happening elsewhere in cricket. In the Royal London One-Day Cup game between Lancashire and Essex, there was a long hold-up after the ball ended up in the rough, and it needed a sizeable search party of players to hunt down the ball. Adding to the chuckle-worthiness was the fact that someone found a different ball at one point in the thicket.

And just in case the clip made you shudder at the thought of snakes loitering in the shrubbery, a slithering invader did manage to turn up uninvited at a different cricket game over the past week: the game between Dambulla Giants and Galle Gladiators in the Lanka Premier League.
Some excitement on the field today..not every day you get a snake trying to field the ball…#LPLT20 pic.twitter.com/MZnKTzWAYU
