What happens to if you apply besan to hair?

The Internet continues to amaze us and provide us with hacks and remedies. A new one doing the rounds is a homemade viral shampoo prepared with simple ingredients like chickpea flour or besan, honey, coconut oil, and water.
“My scalp was 100 percent clean and felt so, too. My hair did feel dry so I had to condition it well post the wash. But overall does the trick yes,” Sonia Gautam, a content creator, claimed on Instagram.
But does it really work?
Dr Karuna Malhotra, cosmetolog and aesthetic physician, Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic Rajouri Garden New Delhi, said trying the viral besan, honey, and coconut oil shampoo “can offer natural benefits for your hair, though it’s essential to understand its suitability for your specific hair type.”

Besan is a natural cleanser that can remove dirt and excess oil from the scalp, leaving hair feeling fresh. Dr Malhotra said honey acts as a humectant, drawing moure into the hair, which can be especially beneficial for dry or frizzy hair. “Coconut oil provides nourishment, helping to reduce protein loss and improve hair strength,” said Dr Malhotra.

However, Dr Malhotra cautioned: “If you have an oily scalp, coconut oil may make hair greasy.” “Additionally, besan can sometimes be drying, so balancing it with adequate honey and oil is key,” she added.

Dr Malhotra said to always perform a patch test to check for allergies, and if you have specific scalp conditions, consult a dermatolog before trying this DIY shampoo.
