Dr Rashi Agrawal, Consultant- Endocrinology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai explained that melatonin is a hormone that is synthesised in the body the pineal gland, and its main function is to control the cycles of sleep and waking up.
Although melatonin regularly aids in sleep, it should be regarded with caution as excess consumption may cause negative repercussions.

What happens when you go overboard with melatonin?
The excessive use of melatonin has numerous negative repercussions for one’s physical health, these include:
Excessive drowsiness: There is the likelihood of point slackening as an offshoot of insufficient mental stimulation.
Head pains and light headiness: Both symptoms fall within the bracket of likely side effects to over consumption.
Behavioral change: Heightened levels of anxiety, agitation or dressed affect these are all negative repercussions of taking excessive doses.

How much melatonin is recommended?
Dr Agrawal shared that medical practitioners base their advised doses with the help of an individual’s age, intended usage and sensitivity. “For maximum efficiency, 1-3 mg should be consumed thirty to sixty minutes before bed depending on the condition of the individual. Certain medical conditions may require 5-10 mg consumption, but even then advise against excessive prolonged consumption,” she said. It would be prudent to seek out your healthcare provider to discuss melatonin first.

What are the health benefits of taking melatonin?
When controlled doses of melatonin are doled out, Dr Agrawal said that you can observe better sleep patterns, especially for long dance travelers or individuals suffering from insomnia. Melatonin helps to protect cells acting as an antioxidant and shielding them from free radicals, thus improving immune system. “It may be effective in reducing the risk of chronic migraines and have a positive influence on mental disorders: Melatonin can enhance mood decreasing stress,” she added.
