What happens to the body when you have poha daily?

Poha is an extremely popular breakfast option, preferred for its lightness, versatility, and nutrition. But did you know that it is not advised for regular consumption, especially if you suffer from digestive issues? That’s what celebrity nutrition Shweta Shah, who has worked with Deepika Padukone, Rishabh Pant, Katrina Kaif and others, recently said.
“A typical make is poha. I am not saying that poha is not a good breakfast. It is good for people who have very good digestion and whose lifestyle is very active because poha is very difficult to digest. So, it may lead to constipation, piles, and acidity. People don’t notice it,” Shah said in a conversation with yoga trainer Shlloka.
What makes poha difficult to digest?
Dr Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, said poha is often recommended for people with good digestion due to its high carbohydrate content and relatively low fibre. “Flattened rice is a processed grain, making it easier to digest, but it lacks the high fibre content that typically aids in regular bowel movements,” said Dr Haricharan.

For individuals with strong digestion, poha provides a quick energy source without putting undue stress on the digestive system. However, Dr Haricharan shared that for those with sluggish digestion or gastrointestinal issues, the lower fibre content may not effectively stimulate proper digestion or bowel movements.

Additionally, poha is often prepared with spices, onions, and peanuts, which can be more challenging for sensitive stomachs. “Therefore, while poha is a wholesome and light meal, it’s most suitable for those whose digestive systems can efficiently handle and process such foods, ensuring they reap its benefits without experiencing discomfort,” noted Dr Haricharan.
For individuals with digestive concerns, pairing poha with a side of high-fibre vegetables or incorporating it into a balanced diet may help mitigate potential issues, shared Dr Haricharan.
How can you incorporate poha and also ensure enhanced digestion?
Manpreet Kaur Paul, nutrition, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Faridabad shared the following:Story continues below this ad
Poha Smoothie Bowl- Blend soaked poha with yoghurt, a banana, and some honey. Top with digestive-friendly toppings like chia seeds, flaxseeds, and a handful of berries or nuts. The combination of poha with yogurt adds probiotics, while the fiber from fruits and seeds supports healthy digestion.

Poha Stuffed Bell Peppers- Prepare a poha mixture with sautéed onions, spices, and digestive herbs like fennel or carom seeds. Stuff this mixture into hollowed bell peppers and bake until tender. Bell peppers add fibre and vitamin C, while the herbs enhance digestive enzyme activity.

Poha and Lentil Soup- Cook a light lentil soup with turmeric, cumin, and ginger. Add soaked poha towards the end and simmer for a few minutes until the poha is soft. The combination of lentils and poha provides protein and fibre, aiding in smooth digestion, while spices have anti-inflammatory properties.
