‘What Rohit Sharma did in the 2019 World Cup; Shubman Gill could do the same for India this year’: Suresh Raina | Cricket News

2011 World Cup winner Suresh Raina heaped praises on Shubman Gill and predicted that the youngster would replicate Rohit Sharma’s unreal 2019 World Cup campaign with the bat in England where the current Indian skipper ended up as the top run scorer (648 runs) with five tons.
“What Rohit Sharma did in the 2019 World Cup; Gill could do the same for India this year. He’ll get 50 overs to bat, so it’s a takeoff point for his batting. I think he’s a born leader and he shows that in his game,” Raina said on JioCinema show ‘Home of the Blues: India Heroes’.
“The form he’s playing in with his hand speed – it’s extremely strong. Spinners don’t know where to bowl to him and if fast bowlers don’t swing the ball, he can play those really well with a straight or a flick. His mindset will not stop here,” he added. Most Read

Gill has been in sublime touch this year. He scored a magnificent double ton against New Zealand earlier this year and the year got better and better for him despite a blip in the Caribbean. He was the leading run-scorer in the IPL with 890 runs and topped the batting charts in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023 with 302 runs.
His ton against Bangladesh in Colombo was a joy to watch as the 24-year-old showed a lot of maturity in the knock chasing a mediocre total while wickets were falling from the other end and the surface was turning and gripping. He gave a masterclass on strike rotation mixed with aggression and showed the other batters how it is done.

“He’s been consent for a year and a half. He struggled in the middle against West Indies, but the way he’s come back and scored good runs in the Asia Cup. He is looking positive, using good footwork, and from getting out at 40 against the West Indies, he is now comfortably hitting 50s and even 100s,” Raina concluded.
