WhatsApp’s February safety report: More than 9.7 million accounts banned in India | Technology News

WhatsApp has released its newest edition of the Monthly Safety Report, according to which it banned over 9.7 million accounts in India. The company said these accounts were banned for violating its Terms of Service. While it did not share the exact reason for these bans, WhatsApp shared that more than 1.4 million accounts were banned “prior to any user reports.”
For those not in the know, every month, WhatsApp releases a report that gives insight into the number of accounts that were banned in a particular month in India. The company says it identifies Indian accounts using the country’s ‘+91’ prefix code.
In a statement, WhatsApp spokesperson said that the new report was published in accordance with the IT Rules 2021 and outlines user complaints received, actions taken and the company’s “proactive approach to preventing abuse, including accounts that were proactively banned.”

To prevent your WhatsApp account from getting banned, make sure you ask contacts for permissions before adding them to a group, refrain from sending bulk messages, not use automated messaging and calling apps and double check messages for authenticity before forwarding them.
In case you think your account was incorrectly banned, WhatsApp requests users to email them or tap on the request a review option in the app. When requesting a review, you will be asked to enter a dix digit code sent via SMS. Upon entering the code, you will be able to submit your request for a review and add relevant details to support the unban request.
