People will fast for nine days, or the first and last two days, with Durga Ashtami being celebrated on Tuesday, September 30, and Maha Navami on Wednesday, October 1.
The festival represents the feminine power, Shakti, which combines the powers of Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer).
It also commemorates the destruction of Mahishasura, a demon, Goddess Durga following a nine-day struggle that concluded on the tenth day as Vijayadashami. She is therefore known as Mahishasuramardini, or the slayer of Mahishasur.
