While You Were Asleep: Harry Kane becomes top scorer for Eng, Ronaldo’s brace helps Portugal thrash Liechtenstein, Bayern sack Julian Nagelsman

England’s star striker Harry Kane becomes England’s all-time top goal scorer with 54 goals as the three lions beat defending Euro champions Italy 2-1 in Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in Group C at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples on Thursday.
“This means everything,” Kane said. “So excited to get back out there and put the England shirt back on. And it had to be a penalty of course. Once it hit the back of the net there was so much emotion. Just huge thanks to the players, staff and fans.”

Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England’s all-time leading goalscorer. I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick 🤣. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry 👏👏👏 pic.twitter.com/mX7M8S8al3

Kane took the penalty in the 44th minute to go past former England legend Wayne Rooney who scored 53 goals from 120 games. However, Kane took only 81 games to go past the previous best. Kane’s penalty helped England double the lead against Italy after Declan Rice opened the score early in the game.
“I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick. Great man, an unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry!” Rooney said on Twitter.
Criano Ronaldo becomes the most capped player in international football
Criano Ronaldo’s brace on Thursday meant that Portugal thrash Liechtenstein 4-0 in group J as part of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.
Joa Cancelo opened the scoring for the Portuguese early in the game and Bernardo Silva doubled the lead in the 47th minute. Ronaldo then scores a couple and with his appearance in the game has set a new record for the most international caps.

“To be in the national team, you have to be committed,” Martínez said of Ronaldo. “It’s a new cycle. It is very important that a player shows commitment and that he can use his experience. Criano has that: A lot of experience and a lot of commitment to the national team.”
Ronaldo had been benched former coach Fernando Santos for Portugal’s final two games at last year’s World Cup in Qatar where they lost in the quarter-finals to Morocco.
Thomas Tuchel will replace Julian Nagelsman
German Giants Bayern Munich sacked their manager Julian Nagelsman on Thursday and according to multiple reports, Thomas Tuchel will replace him. The defending Bundesliga champions lost 2-1 to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Sunday which meant that arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund take the top spot and Bavarians move into the second spot.
The 35-year-old took charge of Bayern in 2021 following Hansi Flick. Nagelsman helped Bayern win their 10th German title in a row.
