Apple on Monday announced that veteran researcher and former Microsoft executive Amar Subramanya will lead its Artificial Intelligence (AI) vertical as vice-president of AI, replacing John Giannandrea, who led Machine Learning and AI Strategy at Apple for seven years. Giannandrea will retire in spring 2026 and during the remaining time, he would serve as an advisor, Apple said in a statement.
Subramanya was at Microsoft prior to his Apple placement for a short stint and served as corporate vice-president of AI at Microsoft. Prior to joining Microsoft, Subramanya spent 16 years at Google where he was head of engineering for the Gemini digital assant.
Who is Amar Subramanya?
A veteran in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning researcher, Subramanya has an experience of over two decades across technology companies. He did his Bachelors in Engineering (BE) from Bangalore University during 1997-2001 and completed his PhD from the University of Washington in 2009.
Subramanya started working with IBM as a software engineer in 2001, where he stayed for a 10 months tenure. Later, he joined Microsoft for a year and went on to join Google in 2009, where he worked for over eight years. Subramanya started as Staff Research Scient in Google and went on to hold several key positions like Principal Engineer and most recently as Vice President (VP) Engineering for Google’s Gemini, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Subramanya joined Microsoft as their Corporate Vice President of AI in July 2025 but has now moved on to lead Apple’s AI vertical as vice president of AI. “AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said.
According to a press release, Apple said, “Subramanya will be leading critical areas, including Apple Foundation Models, ML research, and AI Safety and Evaluation…His deep expertise in both AI and ML research and in integrating that research into products and features will be important to Apple’s ongoing innovation and future Apple Intelligence features.”
