Why dogs circle before pooping | Pets-animals News

If you’re a dog parent, you’ve probably noticed your furry friend spinning in circles before finally settling down to do their business. While it might seem amusing or even odd, this behaviour is more than just a quirky habit.
According to Dr Udaya Kumar Shetty, Chief Veterinary Officer in Udupi, “Dogs circling before pooping is a common behaviour that’s often observed,” and there are several possible reasons behind it. He broke them down below:
1. Scent marking
One of the primary reasons dogs circle before relieving themselves is to mark their territory. “Dogs have scent glands in their paws, and circling may help them deposit their scent on the ground,” explains Dr Shetty. This subtle territorial behaviour helps dogs communicate with other animals, signalling their presence and claiming a spot.
“Circling and pooping may be a way for dogs to communicate with other dogs through scent marking,” says Dr Shetty. This is one of the ways canines silently exchange information about their health, territory, and presence.
2. Preparing the area
In nature, a clean and safe place to defecate is crucial. Dr Shetty notes, “Circling may help dogs prepare the area for defecation trampling down grass or other vegetation.”

3. Finding the perfect spot
“Dogs may circle to find the right spot to poop, taking into account factors like texture, smell, and visibility,” Dr Shetty explains. Some dogs are picky, and their circling might be their way of finding a location that feels comfortable and safe.
4. Instinctual heritage
According to Dr Shetty, this behavior has deep evolutionary roots. “Circling before pooping may be an inherited behavior from wild ancestors, who needed to prepare a safe and suitable area for defecation,” he explains. In the wild, this helped ensure the area was clear of threats, insects, or obstacles.Story continues below this ad
Additional factors that may influence this behaviour
Beyond the more obvious reasons, some surprising theories have emerged:
1. Earth’s magnetic field
Yes, really. “Some research suggests that dogs may be influenced the Earth’s magnetic field when choosing a spot to poop,” Dr Shetty mentions. Studies have observed dogs aligning their bodies along the north-south axis while pooping, hinting at an innate magneto-sensitivity.
2. Environmental cues
Dogs are keen observers. “Dogs may use visual cues, such as the position of the sun or the layout of the environment, to determine the direction they face when pooping,” explains Dr Shetty. So if your dog seems to be reading the sky before pooping, they just might be!
While we may never fully understand the intricacies of this behaviour, it’s clear that circling before pooping serves multiple functions.Story continues below this ad
