IND vs ENG: What is the record for most team runs on Day 5 to win a Test? England target hory vs India at Leeds today | Cricket News

India vs England 1st Test Day 5: The iconic Headingley grounds in Leeds is set to revisit hory and the record books as Ben Stokes’ England aim to chase down a mighty 371-run total against India on the final day of play on Tuesday.
In what has been a see-sawing contest that has seen India and England exchange momentum despite their high-scoring first essay, the visitors regained momentum to set the Bazballers a 371-run target, eerily similar to their last meeting in England two years ago at Edgbaston. In the rescheduled fifth Test of the last iteration of the series in Birmingham, England chased down their record highest Test total of 378 on the final day, with unbeaten centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow stunning Jasprit Bumrah-led India.

However, only 119 runs of England’s eventual 378/3 total came on the final day at Edgbaston, then after the hosts romped to a superb start on day 4, finishing on 259/3 in only 57 overs. Things are a lot different this time as England will resume the chase at 21 for no loss, requiring a whopping 350 runs to victory on Day 5. While it is not entirely out of reach for the Bazballers, England will still be gunning for hory with a massive Day 5 pursuit.

What is the record for most runs scored on Day 5 to win a Test match?
Interestingly, it was at Headingley that the Test record for the most runs scored a team on day five to win a match was set, 77 years ago! Set a target of 404 on the final day to chase England in the 1948 Ashes at Leeds, Don Bradman’s legendary ‘Invincibles’ Australian side chased down the record total in 114.4 overs. Captain Bradman remained unbeaten on 173 on 255 balls while opener Arthur Morris put Australia’s chase in motion with his massive 182, laced with 33 fours.
Australia’s pursuit remains undefeated to this day as the only instance where a team scored over 400 runs on Day 5 to win a Test. India’s 325-run chase at the Gabba led Rishabh Pant’s iconic knock in 2021 is the recent entry into the top five on the charts and England can vault to the second spot on the charts as only the second team in hory to score 350 runs on the final day of a Test to win the Leeds Test.
