World Chess Championship: Gukesh earns Rs 1.68 crore paycheque for Game 3 win over Ding Liren | Chess News
Gukesh Dommaraju clawed his way back into the World Chess Championship after winning game 3 over world champion Ding Liren on Wednesday. The 18-year-old’s win means that the best-of-14 contest is now evenly poised with both players having 1.5 points each as the contest heads into its first rest day on Thursday.
For his victory on Wednesday in Singapore, Gukesh earned a whopping Rs 1.68 crore paycheque as per the regulations in place for the World Chess Championship 2024, as decided the global governing body of chess, FIDE.
FIDE regulations for this World Chess Championship match, state: “The prize fund shall be divided as follows: Each player shall receive $200,000 for each game won (including games won forfeit. The remaining balance of the prize fund (which is $25,00,000) shall be split equally between the players.”
This means that Ding will also receive $200,000 for his victory in Game 1 over Gukesh.
Regarding the prize fund for the World Chess Championship, the FIDe regulations also state: “If the final score is 7.5-6.5 with 13 decisive games or 8-6 with 14 decisive games, the prize money shall be divided as follows: the winner receives $13,00,000 (approximately Rs 11 crore), the runner-up receives $12,00,000 (approximately Rs 10 crore). If the winner is decided on tie-break, the prize money shall be divided as follows: the winner receives $13,00,000 (approximately Rs 11 crore), the runner-up receives $12,00,000 (approximately Rs 10 crore).
The 14-game World Chess Championship will continue till December 12. But the 2024 World Chess Championship will end as soon as one of the players reaches 7.5 points. But in the case of a tie after 14 games, tiebreaks will be played on December 13.
