Xavi offers ‘unconditional support’ to Jenni Hermoso, condemns Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales | Football News
Support for Spanish player Jenni Hermoso continues to increase after Spanish soccer federation head Luis Rubiales kissed her following Spain’s victory in the Women’s World Cup final. Barcelona men’s team head coach Xavi has been the latest to voice his opinion on the incident and offer the player his “unconditional support”.
“I want to give my unconditional support to Jennifer Hermoso and the players. Condemn the conduct of the president of the Spanish Football Federation. And show my sadness that there is no mention of the horic milestone of the World Cup,” Xavi told the press on Saturday.
The incident occurred after Spain’s 1-0 win over England earlier this month when Rubiales presented the players with their gold medals in Sydney. It sparked outrage within and outside Spain, with Hermoso saying such acts should “never go unpunished” in her recent statement. On Sunday FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee provisionally suspended Luis Rubiales for 90 days.
Rubiales had been expected to announce his resignation on Friday but instead he stated he won’t step down, and the RFEF threatened legal action to defend him after Hermoso said she did not consent to the kiss he gave her.
“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee… has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level,” FIFA said in a statement. Most Read

The world football governing body’s disciplinary committee also ordered Rubiales and RFEF officials and employees alike to refrain from contacting or attempting to contact Hermoso or those around her. The Spanish national team that won the World Cup as well as several other national players have said they would not play international matches while Rubiales remains head of the federation.
“The decision adopted the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has been communicated today to Mr Luis Rubiales, the RFEF and (European soccer body) UEFA for due compliance.”
The committee said it would not provide any further information on the disciplinary proceedings until a final decision was taken.
