YouTube overhauls Shorts: Instant view counts, AI editing tools, and new metrics | Technology News

YouTube is making a few changes to its Shorts product, including how views are counted, while the Partner Program eligibility remains the same. The YouTube app now features more capable Shorts video editing tools, including new templates and the ability to transform pictures into stickers using AI.
These changes have been implemented based on creator feedback. Now, the moment a user sees a Short, it will be regered as a view—removing the previous requirement of watching it for a few seconds for it to count.

Alongside this, YouTube is introducing a new metric for Partner Program eligibility called “engaged views,” which will be accessible to creators via YouTube Analytics.
To become eligible for the Partner Program and enable monetisation on YouTube, a creator must have an account with 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 valid public watch hours or 10 million public Shorts views. They must also earn at least $100 to receive payments via Google AdSense.

YouTube has supported Shorts of up to three minutes for a while, and with the improved video editor, users now get more control over music placement from YouTube’s library. They can also pinch and zoom, offering better control over the final output.
Now, users can also transform any photo into a sticker using AI, simplifying and personalising the video creation process.
YouTube believes that since Shorts were integrated into the Partner Program two years ago, they have become the entry point for many creators. The platform aims to empower creators with more tools to streamline the Shorts creation process.
