2 deaths due to Nipah virus in Kerala, Center sends team for help

Two people have died of Nipah virus in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed today. The confirmation came hours after a district-wide health alert was issued yesterday after two “natural” deaths were reported at a private hospital.

“A central team has been sent to Kerala to assess the situation and help the state government control the Nipah virus,” Mandaviya said.

The first death occurred on August 30 and the second death.

How Kerala Govt Prepares

The Kerala government has set up a control room in Kozhikode and advised people to wear masks as a precaution. Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged people to be cautious and said there was no need to worry as people in close contact with the victims would be treated.

“There is no reason to worry. Those who came into contact with them are being sought and treated. The key to solving the situation is caution. Everyone is asked to cooperate according to the action plan developed by the health board.
