30,983 fresh cases, 290 deaths in UP

Even as there was a jump in the number of fresh corona cases in Uttar Pradesh, the number of fatalities came down below 300 while the number of recoveries continued to be more than the infections on Sunday. During the last 24 hours, 290 people died across the state while 30,983 fresh cases were detected. The number of active cases in the state also went below the 3-lakh mark.

Former MLC and three-time Mayor of Lucknow Dr Dauji Gupta succumbed to post-Covid complications on Sunday. He had recovered from the infection on April 30.

The state capital reported 3,342 new infections while 25 died in the last 24 hours. In Kanpur, 21 people died and 1,357 new cases were found while 20 fatalities were reported from Ghaziabad along with 1,085 new infected cases. In Jhansi, 18 people died and 715 fresh cases were detected.

In Varanasi, 1,610 new infections were reported while 16 patients lost the battle to corona. A total of 14 patients died in Prayagraj and 974 new infections were reported, while 13 died and 395 fresh cases were detected in Agra in the last 24 hours.

In Gautam Buddha Nagar, 12 patients lost their lives while 1,571 new infections were reported. Besides, 1,089 new cases were detected in Saharanpur and 962 in Bareilly.

The spread has also been rampant in Lakhimpur where six people died in the last 24 hours.

Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Medical and Family Welfare Amit Mohan Prasad said that a maximum of 2.97 lakh samples were tested on Saturday, of which 1.28 lakh samples were tested through RT-PCR. He claimed that the infection was gradually decreasing in the state.

The number of active cases in the state stands at 2.95 lakh, which was 3.01 lakh on Saturday. He said vaccination of people in the age group of 18-44 years has started in seven districts and would continue in the next week. So far, 1.03 crore people have been administered at least one vaccine dose while 23.74 lakh have taken both the doses.

Additional Chief Secretary, Information, Navneet Sehgal said that a campaign to identify suspected patients would be conducted in more than 90,000 villages of the state from May 4 to 8. If people are found to be having symptoms, medicines would be provided to them, he added.
