Retire batter out if can’t hit boundaries as much as he could: Simon Doull’s controversial take on Shubman Gill’s innings vs LSG
Simon Doull had a controversial take on Shubman Gill’s 94-run innings against Lucknow Super Kings saying that if a batter is struggling to play the big shots, teams should opt to retire him. He also pointed out that a player like Rahul Tewatia could have been introduced then in order to bolster GT’s score even further.
“Shubman was getting tired. He wasn’t able to hit the boundaries as much as he could. And it can happen. Len…it might be controversial, but I am waiting for the day when a bloke gets 75 or 80 off 45 balls and is cooked after the afternoon heat which is 45 degrees and hence quite can’t get there so he says ‘Okay Tewatia, you are out there.’ Retire him out,” Doull said, talking to Cricbuzz.
“I am saying time and time again, milestones don’t matter in this game. I know people will still say hundred is a hundred. Yes it is, but it’s a hundred if you win. If you lose, it means jack. I feel were just quite there when a guy says that he is tired and is not able to hit the boundaries. And if you have ammunition in the bank then why not use it,” he added.
Gujarat Titans posted an imposing 227 for two against Lucknow Super Giants in their Indian Premier League match on Sunday.
Sent in to bat, defending champions GT were off to a blering start with both Wriddhiman Saha (81 off 43 balls) and Shubman Gill (94 off 51) going after the bowling from the word go, helping the team amass 78 runs in the powerplay. Gill remained unbeaten.
The two were involved in an opening partnership of 142 runs in just 12.1 overs.
Last month, Doull had also criticized Virat Kohli for his innings against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Chinnaswamy.
“Kohli was concerned about a personal milestone. He took 10 balls to score eight runs. Started off like a train, took 10 balls from 42-50 runs,” Doull had said.
