Shubman Gill continues dream run in 2023 with first IPL hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad
In 17 matches for India in 2023, Shubman Gill has five hundreds across formats, making up for 980 runs. Two of those came at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a second in his Test career and a first in T20Is. On Monday, the Indian opener added another one, his first IPL century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In a 58-ball innings, laced with 13 fours and a maximum, Gill would manufacture 101 runs. After Gujarat were put in to bat first Hyderabad, the 23-year-old would be one of the only two batters who scored in double digits for Gujarat Titans, Sai Sudharsan (47 off 36) would be the other.
Despite much of the batting order failing, Gill’s innings would help Gujarat propel to 188/9 in their 20 overs of batting.

Playing his sixth season in the league, Gill has already scored 533 runs, the most he has in a single IPL season. The century was a sixth instance of a triple figure score this season.
For Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar would bag five wickets giving away just 30 runs in his four overs quota. Marco Jansen, Fazalhaq Farooqi and T Natarajan would nab a wicket each.
“When we were 16 (overs) down, we thought if we keep them close to 200 it would be good, but restricting them to 189 was great. Till 19th over, the wicket looked good to me. When it came to the second over, it did not swing much. When I came back for the last 2 overs, I tried to use the dimensions,” Bhuvneshwar would say in the mid-innings break. “We were thinking to stop them close to 200. Batting unit will be confident to chase this down, especially after chasing more than 200 against Rajasthan. With those big hitters, you have to use those bigger boundaries. You have to back yourself. The moment Shubman got out, we knew they were 10 runs short.”
