Arvind Kejriwal was furious with the BJP when the Center’s controversial Delhi Service Bill passed the Rajya Sabha barrier this evening after eight hours of discussion.
The Delhi National Capital Territory Government’s (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed with the approval of Rajya Sabha with 131 votes in favor and 102 votes against.
“BJP has lost four polls against AAP, they tried to usurp power in Delhi through the back door,” the prime minister said in a televised address shortly after the bill was passed. .He also said it was an “insult” to Delhi’s right to vote.
“I would like to thank all the political parties who have supported the AAP against the Delhi Utility Bill,” added the minister. Interior Minister Amit Shah defended Bil in the Rajya Sabha, saying the bill is intended to ensure efficient and corruption-free governance in the nation’s capital.
The bill, passed by the Lok Sabha last week, replaces the order issued by the Center to manage the transfer and appointment of Delhi government officials. However, the Supreme Court, which last month set up a constitutional committee to review parliament’s power over governance in Delhi, has yet to issue its ruling.
