Four people were injured – one seriously – after members of two communities clashed in Maharashtra’s Satara district on Sunday night. Police said on Monday that the stone-throwing and arson had led to “appropriate” messages on social media.
The violence took place at Pusesawali village in Khatao tehsil of Satara district at 9:30 pm on Sunday, following which internet services were suspended in the area as a precautionary measure. One video of the violence shows a group of people running down a busy street; they seem to be running away from something. The video then cuts back to show the rest of the street – with shops and eateries still open – and a police jeep. Officials, who warned against believing or spreading rumors on social media, also said some houses were damaged.
In another video, people run down a side street as what appears to be a building is on fire.
Other videos – from Monday morning – show charred and empty streets lined with police barricades and security forces. A Sports Utility Vehicle with a broken rear window and a two-wheeler that was set on fire are also shown. The police responded quickly and the situation is now under control, officials said, adding that security is now heavily present and a number of people have been arrested.
