Ranji Trophy: Ishan Kishan named as captain of Jharkhand | Cricket News

Ishan Kishan has been named the captain of the Jharkhand side for the upcoming Ranji Season 2024/25. The side will take on Assam in their opening clash in Guhawati. Kishan made it into domestic cricket this year playing the Buchi Babu trophy for Jharkhand, Duleep Trophy for India C, and turned up for the Rest Of India in Irani Cup.
In February 2024, the 26-year-old was snubbed from the BCCI central contracts after he was deemed to have skipped domestic red-ball matches. BCCI secretary Jay Shah at the time has warned top cricketers that domestic cricket remains a “critical yardstick for selection” to the national team and non-participation in it will have “severe implications”.
However, those close to the player feel the secretary’s warning is not directed towards Ishan. “Ishan has always given priority to the Ranji Trophy. In the 2022-23 season, he was constantly traveling with the Indian cricket team but despite the hectic schedule he played a couple of Ranji Trophy games, and scored a century against Kerala, which helped him earn a place in India’s Test team. All these accusations are just rubbish.”
Regardless Kishan has lost his place from the Indian side eventually in all three formats. This publication has earlier reported in January that Kishan had made himself available for the T20Is against Afghanan, but was dropped despite opener Ruturaj Gaikwad being unavailable for selection. Despite doing well in the limited opportunities he has got with the national team, Kishan has lost out on his spot across formats.
“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. But I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that,” Kishan told The Indian Express in an exclusive interview as he explained his decision to take a break from the national set-up.
Squad: Ishan Kishan (capt), Virat Singh (vice-capt), Kumar Kushagra (wk), Nazim Siddique, Aryaman Sen, Sharandeep Singh, Kumar Suraj, Anukul Roy, Utkarsh Singh, Supriyo Chakraborty, Saurabh Shekhar, Vikas Kumar, Vivekanand Tiwary, Manishi, Ravi Kumar Yadav, Raunak Kumar
