Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif uses Mirza Ghalib’s poetry to describe his condition in jail
Lahore: Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, on Thursday, used Mirza Ghalib’s poetry to explain his condition in the Kot Lakhpat jail. When the leaders of his party Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) went to meet him at the jail, Sharif reportedly said, “Un ke dekhey se jo ajati hai munh par rounaq, Woh samajhtey hain ke beemar ka haal achcha hai.” According to Geo News, Sharif said that he welcomes ‘anyone who comes here’.
The 69-year-old former prime minister of Pakistan is serving a seven-year term in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail. He was rushed to a hospital on January 22, after he complained of a heart condition. Following medical tests, Sharif was discharged from the hospital and taken back to the jail. According to Geo News, Sharif resorted to using Ghalib’s poetry, in response to PML-N leaders’ questions on his health.

Sharif reportedly said that the current economic condition in the country and suggested economic measures for the development and betterment of the debt-ridden country. He reportedly also opined that stalling of China Pakistan Economic Corridor will be a great loss to Pakistan. Earlier, his mother and daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif also visited him in the prison. “He has had multiple episodes in the last few days which he has been treating with sublingual sprays & tablets. They took him back to jail yesterday, conveniently turning a blind eye to the recommendations of the doctors and boards,” Maryam tweeted on Wednesday. Sharif was imprisoned after being held guilty on charges of corruption by an anti-corruption court in Pakistan.
