Anurag called Abhinav business-minded. “Since the very beginning, he saw films like commerce and I was a cinephile. He came here to study management. When I used to be at home and any work came to me, I used to feel like not doing it. He used to tell me, ‘Main karvaata hu (I will get it done)’. Vo khud karta tha mere naam par, mujhe pata bhi nahi chalta tha (He used to do it under my name and I never even realised),” he concluded.

He added they are not on speaking terams. “We know each other better than even our parents do. We argue often. He’s older, and when he feels I’ve made a make, he has even raised his hand at me. He’s beaten me many times, but I can’t hit him back because he’s my elder brother. The last time we spoke, I felt he was the one who made a make, so I stopped talking to him. That’s it”.
Abhinav also spoke about setback in his own career, especially after Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Karan Johar starrer Bombay Velvet (2016)flopped. The filmmaker still stands behind the fact that the film’s high budget of Rs 90 crore led to its box office disaster. In a recent interview, he revealed that his producing partners dropped his budget from Rs 90 to Rs 3.5 crore and he accepted it happily to avoid being stuck in a loop. He also opened up about the ordeal with his brother, filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap.
During a conversation with Komal Nahta on Game Changers, Abhinav shared that his investors offered less money after the debacle. “After Bombay Velvet in 2016, I asked my producing partner or studio that if I don’t tell them the script and star cast, how much money would they give me? They said Rs 3.5 crore. So, after Rs 90 crore, I straight away went to Rs 3.5 crore because I didn’t want to get in a fuss.”
The filmmaker further added, “I have seen many filmmaker friends, even my own brother. When you make a big film, and then make a second big film which doesn’t work, you get stuck. You then spend all your life in proving a point of ‘Big film, big film, big film’!”
