At Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, high-profile Indian and foreign leaders to be in attendance
New Delhi: The oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his new council of ministers on Thursday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan will be attended by several national and international leaders.
The main function begins at 7 pm. The leaders from BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries – Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan – are on Prime Minister’s guests list and so are Kyrgyzstan President Sooronbay Jeenbekov, Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar on Tuesday said that the ceremony will also be attended by Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid, Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena, Myanmar President U Win Myint, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering.
Thailand will be represented by its Special Envoy Grisada Boonrach while Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be absent from the ceremony due to professional duties.
This time, India has not sent out an invite to the leaders of SAARC countries (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation). In 2014, the then PM of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif had attended PM Modi’s swearing-in.
Meanwhile, several leaders from the Opposition parties and chief ministers have been invited to the ceremony.
Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao are some of the leaders who will be in Delhi.
PM Modi was re-elected for a second consecutive term at the Centre on May 23 with a thumping majority. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 354 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
