Big failures of Modi’s Government for upcoming election

Ironically, the very issue that Narendra Modi campaigned for in 2013 is the one the administration has escalated the most since it took office. Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been remarkably reluctant to talk about his government’s successes during his election campaigns for the five state councils.

This is also ironic, as we know that the prime minister is a propaganda lover. So much so that parliamentary questions revealed that the government had spent about $488 billion in tax dollars promoting its “achievements.” As this administration enters its final five months, it is becoming increasingly apparent that historic opportunities have been missed. The dual benefit of a historic public mandate and three years of low oil prices gave the Modi government an opportunity to implement far-reaching reforms. Rather, it resulted in a government with questionable priorities and a lack of legislative clarity. The achievements of the Modi government are controversial. But there were key failures that would undoubtedly shape the Modi government.

Demonetization.

This will top the list because it has not been entirely successful and has caused widespread destruction to the economy. It is now taught as a lesson in business schools abroad but enjoys the unique advantage of failing to achieve all of its goals (fighting terrorism financing, counterfeit currency and black money) and destroying jobs. A study by renowned economist Arun Kumar and the Indian Center for Economic Monitoring continues to show that we are not out of the woods yet.

Farmers betrayal

The number of peasant suicides has skyrocketed under the Modi government. The final budget called for a minimum support price plus 50%, but BJP presented a version that no one was happy with. At the same time, the Modi government imprudently imported wheat and legumes, causing the prices of domestic products to plummet. In addition, there is also the unwise move to amend the 2013 Land Acquisition Law. forcibly seize land for peasant jobs

When governments have to modify the way they calculate GDP to make the numbers look artificially high, when unprecedented levels of capital flight occur, when companies turn to outside lenders to fund their operations, we will find that governments are failing to create jobs.

This is a grim report by any standards, but it is far from exhaustive. Huge numbers of blue chip debtors who have shamelessly fled the country with public sector money, utterly frightening spikes in oil and LPG prices, declining levels of political discourse, and so on. These are just a few of the many missteps this government has to answer. Ironically, during the 2013 election campaign, the Prime Minister promised to address these very issues. Instead, he tightened it so much that it would take years to undo the damage.
