(Photo: AP)Trump speech live: US President Donald Trump is set to speak on the Iran conflict in a prime-time address, as Iran denies his claim that it has sought a ceasefire. Iran called the statement “false and baseless”. Tehran has rejected ceasefire claim Iran’s foreign minry said it had not asked for a ceasefire, dismissing Trump’s remarks as untrue. The denial, reported state media, came after Trump said on social media that Iran’s leadership had approached the US for a truce.
He added that Washington would only consider any ceasefire if the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and clear”. “Iran’s New Regime President… has just asked the United States of America for a ceasefire,” Trump said, adding that military operations would continue until conditions in the strait change.Story continues below this ad

All eyes on Trump’s address: Trump is expected to outline the next steps in the conflict during his speech, scheduled for 9pm ET (6:30am ). A White House official told the Associated Press that the address will focus on US objectives in Iran, including targeting its missile programme, naval forces and regional allies, and preventing it from developing nuclear weapons. The speech comes as tensions remain high, with the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz affecting global oil supplies and pushing up energy prices.
Earlier, Trump said the conflict could end soon but did not give a clear timeline. “We’re going to be out pretty quickly,” he said, adding that the US could carry out limited strikes in future if required.
