Fast starts to a batter’s Test career have been a rare phenomenon. Only a select l of individuals have managed to temper and maintain their early starts in whites and convert them to prolific careers.
The 1000-run mark is the first major milestone in Test cricket and several legendary figures of the sport have blitzed their way to the feat. West Indies’ Everton Weekes and England’s Herbert Sutcliffe continue to hold the benchmark for the quickest batters to 1000 Test runs, both reaching the landmark in only 12 innings.
While Weekes achieved it within a year and 14 days of his debut in 1949, Sutcliffe scaled the mark in only 244 days of his debut in 1925. Batting genius Don Bradman ranks second on the l, having reached the mark in 13 innings with five centuries to his name in 1930. Among Asians, former India batter Vinod Kambli is still the quickest to the 1000-run mark, achieving it in only 14 innings. Recently, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal came close to Kambli’s record as he reached 1000 Test runs in 16 innings.
Sri Lanka’s in-form batter Kamindu Mendis is on the prowl to rewrite the record books after smashing five hundreds within 13 innings. The left-hander from Galle can better or equal Kambli for the Asian record and rank within the top five fastest batters to 1000 Test runs.
