‘India has a good captaincy option in him after Rohit Sharma is done’: Wasim Jaffer on Ajinkya Rahane
Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer predicted that if Ajinkya Rahane can improve upon his consency with the bat he can be a good captaincy option for the side in the future after Rohit Sharma hangs his boots.
Despite playing 84 Tests the veteran batter’s average is 38.7 and has been on a decline for the past few years. Speaking to media during an interaction organised Jio Cinema on Friday Jaffer said, “Consency has been an issue, he will have to overcome it because India has a good captaincy option in him after Rohit Sharma is done. Rahane will have to make runs, and then everything else will follow,” Jaffed said.
Rahane did a magnificent job as a leader in the 2020/21 India tour of Australia. Despite injuries to senior players and Virat Kohli’s unavailability after the first Test, Rahane with his sharp and inspirational captaincy led the team to seal a famous series win after getting thrashed in the first Test.
The turnaround began with Rahane leading from the front in Melbourne scoring an exquisite ton. However, his form dipped thereafter with the bat. “If his form was great from that Australia series after that 36 all-out, the way he led, scored a hundred in Melbourne… had his form remained the same, he would have been the next Test captain. But he lost his form and got dropped,” told Jaffer.
Representing Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023 Rahane scored blering knocks and got himself back into the side for the World Test Championship final. He scored a half-century in the first innings and played a decent cameo in the second. “He reinvented himself in the IPL and got a chance in the WTC final,” Jaffer said.
He was appointed the vice-captain as well because the Indian selectors see a good leader in him. He still has age on his side but he needs to score runs, if he does not then he will find it difficult,” he added.
