They pray for the safety and longevity of their husbands lives by observing this fast. Women also gather together and listen to old folklores and tales associated with the auspicious fast. Women observing Karva Chauth break the fast only after offering prayers to the moon. Women offer water to the moon as a part of their prayer by holding an Atta Chani in another hand.

Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi

Women start their Karwa Chauth vrat by taking a Sankalp. Karwa Chauth tends to coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi which is a day dedicated to worship of Lord Ganesha. However on the day of Karwa Chauth along with Lord Ganesha his entire family including Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Kartikeya are worshipped.
Goddess Parvati who plays an immense significance in Hindu women and their marital life is worshipped first as Akhand Saubhagyavati during the Puja followed by Lord Shiva, Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha. Hindu women also worship ad sing praises of Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata who are a form of Goddess Parvati itself on the day of Karwa Chauth. According to Hindu scripture Vratraj, the best time to perform Karwa Chauth Puja is during Sandhya time which starts after sunset. After the moon rises, women should worship God Chandra and after making offering to him should break the fast.

Karwa Chauth 2017 Fast and Sargi

Women in Northern India, especially in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab observe dusk to dawn Karva Chauth fast for their husbands. It is a custom for the women to wake up early in the morning before sunrise, that is around 4-5 am, and eat a plateful of savouries and sweets so as to keep going throughout the day without water and food. According to the rituals and traditions, the mother-in-law presents a thali of sweetmeats and savouries to her daughter-in-law only to bless her for the completion of the fast. A Sargi ideally consists of mithai, matthri, dry fruits, coconut and some gifts like sarees, jewellery and others.

Mehendi and Shringhar on Karwa Chauth 2017

In the evening, women dress up beautifully with new clothes and jewelry and apply henna or mehendi on their hands. Applying mehendi or henna is considered to be auspicious for married women and is also a significant part of the wedding rituals in India. It is believed that the darker the mehendi, the more you are loved and adored by your husband.
