New Congressional Work Committee – Focus on polls, not swaying boats

The announcement of the new team comes ten months after Mr. Kharge took office as National Assembly Speaker and is seen as an attempt to balance aspirations, loyalty and promote preparation for the future.

Focusing on the state elections and then 2024, the new team of National Assembly Speaker Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Sunday that it is carefully managing both old and new.It plays out safely, conveys some expected face, but most importantly makes it clear that the main goal of the party will be to fend off the polls and that organizational politics should not get in the way of that goal.

The announcement of the new team comes ten months after Mr. Kharge took office as National Assembly Speaker and is seen as an attempt to balance aspirations, loyalty and promote preparation for the future.

Gandhi family members and Congress veterans like Digvijay Singh, Kamal Nath, Meira Kumar, P Chidambaram, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Salman Khurshid were part of the main body, some young people like Gaurav Gogoi and Pilot Sachin has also been provided with accommodation. Although the expansion is due to internal quotas for youth, SC, ST, OBC and women in the highest executive body, the main CWC has only three members under the age of 50.

The party chose a date, the birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, to make the announcement. The party’s victory in Karnataka, the Supreme Court upholding Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case and the important role that Congress can play in the united opposition are particularly important factors for the party. This new CWC.

The new CWC has several messages – including Shashi Tharoor, who challenged Mallikarjun Kharge in last year’s party presidential election, young leaders like Sachin Pilot and Gaurav Gogoi, promoting social representation and efforts Mr. Kharge’s efforts to keep people in the changing dynamics of state politics pleased.

Last year, the party decided to increase the size of the CWC from 23 to 35. The new CWC has a total of 84 members, including 39 regular members, 32 permanent guests and 13 special guests. One also focuses on Delhi, as the national capital is important if the AAP Congress manages to have a coalition. Former Union minister Ajay Maken, who stepped down as a Rajasthan Parliamentary official in November, has been reinstated, while Alka Lamba, who returned to Parliament after the PAA, has done the same.

The leadership of the National Assembly, the way positions are appointed, the way elections or selections are conducted within the party system, are of great interest to anyone who closely observes Indian politics. The CWC announced on Sunday is all the more important as it is the first major organizational reshuffle for Mr Kharge, who has become the first non-Gandhi party leader in 20 years. He is responsible for appointing, not electing, all members of the CWC. In this regard, Mr Kharge’s new group is a party attempt to make some changes, but without rocking the boat too much.
