What happens when you drink silver-infused water?

After detox and copper vessel waters, silver-infused water has grabbed the attention of social media, with some posts suggesting that drinking water infused with pure silver offers a host of health benefits. Take, for instance, Tejal Parekh, a certified fitness coach, who claimed that one should add a silver coin to a pot of water and drink it.
“I’ve been placing a silver coin in my water pot for over 10 years, and it’s been a game-changer for my family’s health, specifically my kid’s immunity! Silver has natural antimicrobial properties that keep the water fresh and free from harmful bacteria. It’s especially great for kids, boosting their immunity and ensuring they drink pure, clean water daily. It promotes gut health, fights water-borne diseases, soothes the digestive tract, is beneficial for skin, and enhances cellular health too,” Parekh stated on Instagram.
According to Parekh, silver supports gut health, detoxification, and overall well-being for adults. “Silver has cooling properties that may help balance excess heat. It brings a sense of calm and reduces stress, which indirectly supports mental clarity and stability! Some traditions believe silver has an energy-balancing effect on the body, promoting vitality and enhancing mental and physical energy. The consent intake of purified water does support cellular health, potentially leading to longer-term wellness,” Parekh added.

She went on to share some precautions:
*Use pure silver: Ensure the coin is 99 per cent pure silver, free from impurities or coatings.*Regular cleaning: Clean the coin weekly with a natural cleanser like lemon and baking soda to prevent buildup.*Monitor water quality: Ensure the base water is already clean; silver is not a substitute for proper filtration, said Parekh.
“When practiced responsibly, using a silver coin in drinking water is safe and beneficial for kids and adults,” stressed Parekh.

Is it true?
While water or food in silver vessels is considered harmless, infusing silver metal in water and consuming silver-infused water might not be advised for anyone, especially children, said Soma Chatterjee, a life coach and energy healing therap.
The benefits of consuming silver-infused water are not scientifically proven and may pose health risks, stressed Jinal Patel, dietitian Zynova Shal Hospital Mumbai. “Using water infused with silver can lead to harmful side effects. Ingesting silver compounds can lead to argyria, which causes irreversible bluish-gray skin discoloration. Silver nanoparticles may accumulate in organs like the liver, causing damage over time. Silver consumption is also linked to neurological damage,” contended Patel.Story continues below this ad

Moreover, silver consumption could interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics and medications. “Silver may cause some gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Be cautious and avoid using silver in your drinking water. Instead, drink clean and filtered water to stay healthy and hearty. It is not a good idea to rely on unproven remedies,” said Patel.
“One can always consume water in a silver container without exposing the water to the metal for long,” said Chatterjee.
